young in the mountains

Mariele Ivy, of Young in the Mountains, is quite the multi-talented designer, creating not one, but two different lines of work: one in silver and one in clay.

Despite working with very different materials, Mariele's aesthetic extends strongly across both, creating beautiful, affordable artwork. See more at Young in the Mountains.

Brett Kern - inflatable toy sculptures

Hey look! It's an inflatable dinosaur! Well, not quite, because while it certainly appears to be your garden-variety plastic toy, it's actually a ceramic sculpture by artist Brett Kern.

Kern's detailed, playful work depicts all manner of blow-up objects in clay - from astronauts and whoppie cushions to balloons - but I think that the dinosaurs are definitely my favorite. Check out Kern's website and shop to see a whole lot more.

experimental animation meets pottery

The UK Crafts Council commissioned animator Jim Le Fevre and Roops and Al Johnstone of RAMP pottery to create a collaborative zoetrope. The results are the absolutely stunning animated ceramic vessel in the video that you see above. Absolutely everything about this project makes me happy. Read more about the process on Le Fevre's blog.

steep

Steep, by Canister, is a very cleverly designed travel mug.

Steep is an all ceramic mug that works with any regular mason jar lid, making it water tight. The lid seals Steep on the top, while the storage compartment on the bottom gives you a place to put your tea bag until you have a chance to throw it away. Learn more about Steep, and be one of the first to own one for yourself, by supporting its Kickstarter campaign.

Nicole Aquillano

The Clay Studio, in Philadelphia, is one of my favorite sources for finding new favorite ceramic artists, with Nicole Aquillano as the latest in an ever-growing roster of exceptional craftsmen whose work I've become obsessed with after seeing it on display in their shop. But who can blame me? With their intricately rendered architectural drawings, Aquillano's porcelain works possess the almost washed-out quality of memories or places visited long ago. I love the imagery, particularly those from her home series of mugs and vases that feature houses on the outside and staircases within.

I have family in the Philadelphia area, so I try to visit The Clay Studio's gallery and shop whenever I'm in town, but they also have an excellent online shop that is almost as good as the real thing, and where you can find work by Aquillano and a host of other talented ceramicists. For more of Aquillano's work, check out her website and shop.
