rainbow in your hand
Masashi Kawamura, of the Japanese creative lab PARTY, created this ingenious new concept for a flip book. Rather than an animation, it creates a 3D rainbow in your hand. See it in action below!
And purchase one for yourself right here.

Fong Qi Wei - time in motion
If you enjoyed Singapore-based photographer Fong Qi Wei's Time is a Dimension, then you're going to love Time in Motion.
Rather than simply capturing a period of time in a static image, Wei has created these gorgeous, shimmering animations. See more on his website.

FlipbooKit Moto
Now here's a fun weekend project - create your own motorized, animated flip book with FlipbooKit Moto! All you need is a screwdriver, and it assembles in under an hour. The kit comes with frames for a galloping horse animation, but wouldn't it be fun to create you own animations as well? Get your own right here.

experimental animation meets pottery
The UK Crafts Council commissioned animator Jim Le Fevre and Roops and Al Johnstone of RAMP pottery to create a collaborative zoetrope. The results are the absolutely stunning animated ceramic vessel in the video that you see above. Absolutely everything about this project makes me happy. Read more about the process on Le Fevre's blog.

Juan Fontanive
Ornithology, 2013. Collage on asuka and watercolor paper, stainless steel, motor and electronics. 12.7 cm x 9.4 cm x 10.1 cm.
Brooklyn-based artist Juan Fontanive is interested in exploring the beauty of sequential and repetitive movement, creating flip-book sculptures that bring hand-drawn animations to life.
Colibri, 2011. Graphite and colored pencils on paper, stainless steel, delrin, motor, electronics. 10 cm x 10 cm x 12.7 cm.
Violetear, 2011. Acrylic and graphite on paper, stainless steel, delrin, aluminum, motor and electronics. 10 cm x 10 cm x 12.7 cm.
I love how the subject matter of birds works so well with these, but how each piece is so distinctively unique. The first two of them above, Ornithology (2013) and Colibri (2011), are available as numbered editions through the New Museum (here and here).

skhizein
"Skhizein," by French director and illustrator Jeremy Clapin, is the story of a man who was hit by a giant meteorite that no one else saw - and ended up exactly 91cm away from where he should be. It may sound like a pretty kooky concept, but it's one that's expertly told thought this wonderful short animation.

the history of typography
Ever wonder why italics were invented? How about the worldwide popularity of Helvetica? And just what is a serif anyway? Well, Canadian designer Ben Barrett-Forrest's stop-motion animation, "The History of Typography," covers it all beautifully, and in under 5 minutes at that.

the human body
The first release from Tinybop, a new studio that's setting out to build a suite of creative educational apps for kids, The Human Body is beautifully animated by the supremely talented Kelli Anderson. Now, my little guy may be way to young for the likes of something like this (it's for kids ages 4+), but that certainly hasn't stopped me from exploring the wonderful workings the body for myself. You can watch the a little teaser stop motion animation for the app below, read a great blog post from Kelli about the illustration process and download the game for yourself through iTunes.

Oamul
Chinese illustrator and animator Oamul's wonderful drawings and GIFs make me very happy.
The above GIFs are from Oamul's wonderful series, the 24 solar terms, but don't worry, there are many more where these came from, over on his website.

understand music
Understand Music from finally. on Vimeo.
It's been a very long time since I've had to read music. I spent quite a few years of my childhood learning to play the piano as well as many years of school singing in a choir, all of which taught me the basics of it. Sadly, other than a few minor efforts over the years to get back into it, I haven't played an instrument or sight read a song in many years, but finally.'s beautiful short animation, Understand Music, make me want to get back into it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

the leisure society - fight for everyone
If you're a fan of miniature animated destruction, you're going to love Fight For Everyone, the wonderful promo video released in anticipation of The Leisure Society's latest album, Alone Aboard The Ark (April 1st). Created by UK-based animation studio Persistent Peril, this delightful little animated gem shows what happens when a giant hand creates life on a new planet and its residents start to take on lives of their own. Enjoy!

Annette Jung - lego dance
Being sick is never fun; being sick while you're nearly 8 months pregnant and are limited in your options for medication is a particularly lousy time. So combine a stuffed-up nose with a cold and rainy Saturday, and it's no wonder that most of the the past two days was spent on the couch. Of course, it wasn't all bad. For starters, there was Annette Jung's Lego Dance to keep me company. It may only be 30 seconds long, but this Lego animation of some of Michael Jackson's signature dance moves certainly managed to make me smile, and I hope it does the same for you.

black books - favorite place
If the combination of pop/rock and images of thread, embroidery stitches, fabrics scraps, and sewing pins sounds as strange to you as it did me, you're going to be very pleasantly surprised by Favorite Place. Created for the band Black Books, graphic designer and videomaker Christophe Thockler used 10,000 photographs and clever lighting techniques to create a fun, if highly unusual, animated music video. Watch it in full screen and rock out.

katachi and a gum boy
My super short animated film fest! v.2 may now be over, but that doesn't mean that the fantastic animations don't keep on coming! First up, Katachi, the latest stop-motion music video for the Japanese singer/songwriter Shugo Tokumaru (whose new album, In Focus? I totally want to purchase), by the animation duo Katarzyna Kijek and Przemysław Adamski. It's pretty much guaranteed to make you want to dance.
(Via Colossal)
And then there's the hand-drawn animation Kuchao/A GUM BOY, by Japanese animator and illustrator Masaki Okuda. With great visuals, fun music and wonderfully different animation styles, I think that that these two little films make for the perfect way to start the week. Enjoy!
