Ukrainian art director and digital artist Nastya Nudnik's "emoji-nation" series pairs well-known works of art with popular culture, social media and graphic design elements to create works that are as clever as they are timely.
My personal favorite is the 4th series, where paintings gain the addition of modal dialogs, but they're all pretty great in their own way. You can see them all right here: part 1, which pairs paintings with their emoji counterparts; part 2, where Edward Hopper's works gain social media icons; part 3, which shows paintings as movie posters; the aforementioned part 4; and part 5, which adds elements of Google's interface.
Mariele Ivy, of Young in the Mountains, is quite the multi-talented designer, creating not one, but two different lines of work: one in silver and one in clay.

I've never been one for monograms, but Mymo, by Ultravirgo, is so different than anything else I've ever seen that I couldn't help but want to learn more. Billed as monograms reinvented for the 21st century, Mymo lets you combine any combination of two letters or numbers to create your very own, very personal, necklace or keychain.

Personal monograms used to be a badge of honor,
embroidered on our every work shirt. But somewhere between mass
production and ephemeral fashion trends, they were left behind. We love
them. So we’re bringing them back — reinvented in a more permanent,
sculptural form, produced just for you with state-of-the art equipment.

But why should a monogram be limited to initials?
Really, any two letters or numbers can make a personal statement: You
and your partner’s initials, your state abbreviation, your football
jersey number, your dog’s birthday. Whatever you want, we don’t judge.
Just pick something meaningful – and next time you see someone with a
Mymo, be sure to ask what theirs represents.

the sort of imaginative play experience that is important for

suspended by steel pipes and cables, climbers are visually elegant works
of art that are also part jungle gym and once alive with children they
become what Thomas Luckey called "fountains of children."

I spent quite a bit of time browsing through Yoskay Yamamoto's portfolio yesterday, and am quite taken with his artwork, particularly his sculptures, many of which he creates from a combination of hand carved bass wood and mixed media components. I especially like that all of his many figures - regardless of whether they're meant to evoke people, animals, cartoon characters, or even moons and planets - all seem so expressive. They're objects with narratives, regardless of whether they've been placed in a specific environment or not, as with his equally fantastic installation work, or even his paintings; it's no surprise to me that he began his career as an illustrator. As Yamamoto's bio explains:

Born and raised in Toba, Japan, Yoskay Yamamoto moved to the United States at the age of 15. A self-trained illustrator, Yamamoto's artistic tastes expanded as he fell in love with the urban culture of the West coast. Yamamoto discovered a way to fuse the two different cultural backgrounds together into his work. Yamamoto nostalgically blends pop iconic characters from his new Western home with traditional and mythical Japanese elements, balancing his Asian heritage with urban pop art.

Pardon the radio silence, but Patrick and I were in Puerto Rico for a wedding - the first time away from Theo, I might add - and it's been a bit of a hectic few days since. It's not easy going from 80 degree sunny weather back to the cold of winter in New York either, let me tell you, which is why I needed to ease back into real life with another lovely vacation spot.

New Orleans'-based painter Adam Mysock was one of my favorite artists at this year's VOLTA NY show. Mysock considers himself to be a "revisionist history painter," using historical imagery as a method of rationalizing our present circumstances. Which makes for a whole lot of beautifully painted, fascinating works featuring robots, people with moons and boats where their heads should be, presidents and explorers in strange lands, and even Richard Simmons. He explains:

As a painter, I’m preoccupied by the undeniable role that the image
plays in creating this acceptance of the fictional. A painting has the
authority to make the intangible concrete, and a series of them has the
ability to authenticate a fabrication in our collective memory.

When I begin a piece, I typically start with preexisting images,
artifacts from this collective remembrance. I look for images that
shape my pictorial consciousness, that are hard to question because when
I first saw them they were presented as the truth. They have to
capture my imagination and they have to feel largely descriptive of a
greater story. From them, I’m given my task – I have to “disrepair”
them. I have to consolidate an earlier world of historical and cultural
visual-fact with an evolving understanding of subtlety and
gradation. I find that the discrepancies I discover between the
absolute and the nuanced inspire me most.

The resultant work is largely about storytelling, the ownership and
authorship of our culture’s visual narratives, and the parallels between
those tales. It’s meant to challenge the truth of “source” and the
source of truth. After all, as Franz Kafka once wrote, It is hard to
tell the truth, for although there 'is' one, it is alive and constantly
changes its face.

"Connected" is a lovely music video for your Monday morning, by singer-songwriter Luke Dick. It's a great song with a universal message that's brought to life through the cut paper illustrations of Benjamin Wright Coleman.
Created from either solid walnut or maple, with some pieces finished in riveted leather and a perfect little mirror, TRONKS&Co.'s pieces are clearly made to last, and to be as special as the jewelry that goes into them. Okay, so I was a little skeptical of this video at first. The concept is a tad gimmicky - While You Were Steeping is part of a marketing campaign for Bigelow Tea, after all - but in the end, I was totally charmed. Unlike those of us who just sit around playing with their phones in the two minutes that their tea takes to steep, Geoff McFetridge spends his time a bit more constructively.
I've always had a soft spot for architectural follies - their impracticability make them intriguing, with their general lack of necessity often paving the way for creativity. So of course, an impossible stairway, providing a means to get nowhere other than a nice view, is right up my alley.
Designed by NEXT Architects, The Elastic Perspective is beautifully winding folly of a staircase in the Dutch city of Carnisselande. As the firm explains about the project:

The design consists of a circular stair which leads
the visitor up to a height that allows an unhindered view of the
horizon. The path makes a continuous movement and thereby draws on the
context of the heavy infrastructural surroundings of ring road and tram
track. While a tram stop presents the end or the start of a journey, the
route of the stairway is endless.

The continuity and endlessness have a double meaning, however.
Because the stair is based on the principal of the Moebius ring, is has
only one surface and can only exist as a three-dimensional object.
Upside becomes underside becomes upside. The suggestion of a continuous
route is therefore, in the end, an impossibility: Far away, so close.

Because of its structure the shape of the object is hard to
perceive; every perspective generates a new image with which the design
is not only a contextual but also a very literal answer to the given
context of the local art plan: an Elastic Perspective.

These magical scenes, part of a series of 360° books, were created by Japanese graphic designer and architect Yusuke Oono. Designed as a way to illustrate books in three dimensions, each can be viewed by both flipping through the individual pages, or the whole thing can be opened up to view as a sort of panoramic scene in-the round. See many more details on Oono's website.
