Coloured Vases (Series 3) is a new work that's part of Dutch designer Hella Jongerius' retrospective show "Misfit," at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in the Netherlands. The objects in this show are arranged by color and are almost entirely attached to the walls, with Coloured Vases (Series 3) as one of the notable exceptions. Like her previous vase series, Jongerius has used the form as way to experiment with color. The colors for these vases were produced in collaboration with glaze experts at Royal Tichelaar Makkum to create colors that are a combination of both 100 historical mineral recipes and 100 modern chemical glaze recipes. When applied to the vases in layers and fired, these glazes create layers and imperfections that amount to some amazing patterns of optical blending, and it's not until you show all 300 of the vases in a group like this that these blending effects really come into sharp focus.
While these vases are meant to be viewed in this circular grouping, I also love these closer images, where you can really see the individual color patterns that make up the larger work.
