Ali Cavanaugh

transposed for the sake of docility

  quiet little butterfly

filtered through understanding

a brilliant overlay

I am totally enamored of Ali Cavanaugh's paintings, and love the way her use of watercolor on plaster gives her work a stunning luminosity. From figures with obscured features in paintings with lyrical titles, bold stripes and bright colors against monotone backdrops, and poses that are at once elegant and unnatural, Cavanaugh's works expertly captures the emotional struggle of adolescence. They are the types of paintings that make you think yes, I know that feeling, in the best possible way.
