mysteries of vernacular

Mysteries of Vernacular: Clue from Myriapod Productions on Vimeo.

I have always been fascinated by language. English is full of odd quirks and has undergone so many changes over the years that it's enough to leave a person mystified. Which is exactly why documentary filmmaker Jessica Oreck chose the topic of vernacular as her latest project, entitled Mysteries of Vernacular. It may be less than 2 minutes long, but this first film, which tackles the history of the word "clue," is comprised of equal parts fascinating narrated documentary and charming animation. In its final form, Mysteries of Vernacular will contain 26 etymological installments, one for each letter of the alphabet. Next up: the letter P, for "pants." What evolutionary mysteries Jessica will uncover about pants is yet to be seen, but I know that I'm certainly looking forward to learning about it.
