Pushett Irby photography

The Brooklyn-based duo Judith Pushett and Kevin Irby, of Pushett Irby Photography, are a great example of what happens when two accomplished photographers combine their talents. These guys work with a true relic: a turn-of-the-century, 11 x 14 inch wood camera. And working it is definitely an art, as it's not only a clunky, heavy piece of equipment, but because they only use available light - which makes exposure times incredibly variable - each shot requires quite a bit of time to set up and several hours to develop and print. But what an amazing end result! Pushett and Irby believe that the experience leads to a more honest portrait that embodies more of the subject's spirit than any other type of camera can deliver, and that it teaches them to slow down and appreciate the beautiful things right in front of them.
